I understand what you're saying, but this only happens over here. Europeans only root for one team, but the rest of the world has like 10 clubs they root for.
The reason probably is because it's cool thing to do. Europe has the best players and the best leagues, so it trendy and cool to root for a club people have no affiliation to. Another reason is, most people who root for more than one team probably don't have an identity, which leads them to identify themselves with teams with different history.
Something that does bother me is when I see Mexicans in Mexico mostly, wear other national team jerseys like Brazil, Spain, or what ever other team is popular at the time.
Though you will never see a European have more than one team, or ever root for a team outside of Europe let alone Mexico.
I think it's lame, but people are free to be team W h0res.
